An early-cycle variety bred for small spaces, mini black oval eggplant produces compact fruits up to 7 cm, with an intense black-purple colour, ideal for pot gardens and balconies.
It belongs to the species Solanum melongena, family Solanaceae. A vigorous plant despite the small fruit size, highly productive throughout the summer.
Sow in a heated seedbed between February and March; thanks to the plant's compact size, it also grows well in a large pot on a terrace or balcony.
It needs full sun exposure for most of the day; it prefers deep, well-drained soil with regular watering, especially during hotter periods.
Thanks to its early cycle and high productivity, it allows for frequent, staggered harvests all summer long, with fruits staying small and tender when picked at the right time.
Grown in pots it is less exposed to soil-borne pathogens, but remains sensitive to Colorado potato beetle and aphids; good container drainage prevents waterlogging.
Thanks to its small size, it is among the most sought-after varieties for whole preparations, preserved in oil or grilled, with no need for cutting.
Like all eggplants, it is a low-calorie vegetable rich in water, fibre and antioxidants concentrated in its dark skin.
Per 100 grams, mini black oval eggplant provides about 23 kcal, 1 g protein, 5.5 g carbohydrates, 0.2 g fat and 2.9 g fibre.
