A very vigorous and productive variety, long black eggplant develops elongated fruits with a purple-to-black colour, among the most widely grown types in Italian vegetable gardens.
It belongs to the species Solanum melongena, family Solanaceae. An upright herbaceous plant with broad leaves and elongated fruits that develop progressively throughout the growing season.
Sow in a heated seedbed between February and March, transplanting into the field from April-May in a large, well-fertilised soil, as this variety requires.
For ideal development it needs enough spacing between plants and regular organic fertilising; steady watering supports the fruits' elongation right up to harvest.
As a very vigorous variety, it helps to support the heaviest fruit-laden branches and keep the soil well drained at all times for balanced plant growth.
Like other eggplants it can be affected by Colorado potato beetle, aphids and red spider mite; good soil drainage prevents root rot after heavy rain.
Its elongated shape and firm flesh make it perfect for slicing and grilling, baking, or using in rolled dishes and parmigiana.
Rich in fibre that supports digestion, long black eggplant is also suitable for low-calorie diets thanks to its low calorie content and antioxidant phytonutrients.
Per 100 grams, long black eggplant provides about 24 kcal, 1 g protein, 5.7 g carbohydrates, 0.2 g fat and 3 g fibre.
