This pack of Essenza elongated watermelon seeds is designed for the home garden, letting you grow one of the most loved summer watermelons yourself, with its elongated shape and the sweet, thirst-quenching flavor typical of Italian tradition.
The plant, belonging to the Cucurbit family (Citrullus lanatus), has a trailing, vine-like habit and develops vines several meters long, with broad, lobed, deep green leaves that shield the developing fruit from direct sunlight.
The fruit, elongated with a rind striped in light and dark green, can reach considerable weights; the bright red flesh inside is crisp, juicy and rich in sugars, perfect enjoyed fresh on summer days.
Sow in a heated seedbed in late winter, or directly in the open field from mid-spring once the soil has reached a stable temperature around 18-20°C, spacing seedlings about one meter apart to leave room for the vines to develop.
It needs a very sunny spot and fertile, loose, well-drained soil; it adapts well to both open-field and tunnel cultivation, ensuring abundant harvests when climate conditions are favorable.
As the fruit swells, it helps to place it on a support to avoid direct contact with damp soil. Reducing watering as ripening approaches encourages sugars to concentrate and improves final flavor.
Watch out for powdery and downy mildew in overly humid conditions; monitor for aphids and spider mites, acting promptly to prevent damage to foliage and fruit.
A highly hydrating fruit thanks to its high water content, low in calories and rich in lycopene, a powerful natural antioxidant, as well as potassium and vitamin C.
