Summer Dream Melon

The Summer Dream melon is an F1 hybrid variety of the Charentais type, valued for its high productivity and resistance to Fusarium and powdery mildew. The plant is vigorous and hardy, with a medium-late production cycle, suitable for both open field and small tunnel cultivation. The fruits have a completely smooth, unribbed skin, silvery-green in colour, turning straw-yellow at full ripeness.

The Summer Dream Melon Plant

Cucumis melo 'Summer Dream' belongs to the Cucurbitaceae family. It is an annual herbaceous plant with creeping stems and simple tendrils, developing vigorously both horizontally and, with adequate support, vertically. The fruits weigh on average 1.2-1.5 kg, with firm, consistent, salmon-orange flesh that is very flavourful, with an aromatic, sweet taste.

How to Sow Summer Dream Melon

Sowing takes place from March to May, directly in the field in warmer regions or in a protected seedbed elsewhere. Seeds should be buried about 2-3 centimetres deep, with 2-3 seeds per hole, keeping a distance of 130 centimetres between rows and 80 centimetres within the row. Germination occurs in 7-10 days at temperatures of 22-28°C. Harvesting takes place 80-90 days after sowing.

How to Grow Summer Dream Melon

Summer Dream melon prefers fertile, well-draining soil rich in organic matter, in a sunny position sheltered from the wind. Watering should be regular and abundant during the growth phase, decreasing as the fruit approaches ripeness to concentrate sugars. Mulching helps retain soil moisture and prevent weed growth.

Tips for Summer Dream Melon

To obtain fruits of uniform quality, it is advisable to pinch side shoots after the fifth-sixth node appears, thus encouraging the development of fruiting branches. Production is staggered, so harvesting should be done multiple times during the season, identifying the ripe fruit by the natural detachment of the stem and the intense fragrance it gives off.

Diseases and Pests of Summer Dream Melon

Summer Dream melon stands out for good genetic resistance to Fusarium and powdery mildew, significantly reducing the need for phytosanitary treatments compared to other varieties. It remains susceptible to aphids, which can transmit viral diseases, and to downy mildew in conditions of high humidity. Regular crop rotation prevents the buildup of pathogens in the soil.

Uses and Curiosities of Summer Dream Melon

Thanks to its sweet, aromatic flavour, Summer Dream melon is perfect eaten fresh in slices, paired with cured ham, or used for fruit salads, sorbets and summer smoothies. Its excellent post-harvest shelf life also makes it suitable for retail sale and long-distance distribution.

Properties of Summer Dream Melon

Melon is composed of about 90% water, making it particularly hydrating and refreshing. It is rich in beta-carotene, a precursor of vitamin A, and vitamin C, both important natural antioxidants. Its high potassium content contributes to cardiovascular wellbeing and the body's electrolyte balance.
