Dried Lingua di Drago Pepper

Dried Lingua di Drago Pepper is the dried version of a hybrid of the species Capsicum chinense, discovered by chance in Italy among Carolina Reaper plants. Still an unstable variety but selected for extreme heat, wrinkled skin and firm, compact fruit texture, it reaches about 2,000,000 Scoville Heat Units.

The Lingua di Drago Plant

The plant is tall and sturdy, able to exceed 120 cm, with a non-woody but very resistant stem and abundant dark green leaves. White flowers are few per node, typical of Capsicum chinense. Fruits are wrinkled to the touch, firm in texture, ripening to red.

How to Sow Lingua di Drago

Sow in a heated seedbed between February and March, keeping temperatures constant at 25-28°C: Capsicum chinense germination is slow, often 3-4 weeks.

How to Grow Lingua di Drago

Transplant between late March and May, exposing the plant to direct sunlight from the start given the heat it needs to develop. It prefers fertile, well-drained soil rich in organic matter.

Heat Level and Care Tips for Lingua di Drago

Given its extreme heat, always handle fruits with disposable gloves. During drying, keep the product away from direct drafts and excessive heat sources to preserve color and aroma.

Diseases and Pests of Lingua di Drago

Like other Capsicum chinense, it can be affected by aphids, spider mites and whitefly, especially under protected cultivation with poor ventilation.

Properties and Uses of Lingua di Drago

Capsaicin, responsible for the heat, has thermogenic properties and boosts metabolism. Dried Lingua di Drago pepper, with a pungent aroma and fruity flavor, is used as powder, sauces or concentrated extracts, always in minimal doses.
