dried Chupetinho Big Red pepper

The dried Chupetinho Big Red pepper is a variant selected in Italy starting from the classic Brazilian Chupetinho, developed to obtain larger fruits. It keeps the typical "pacifier" shape, but reaches a maximum length of 4 cm and a diameter of 2 cm, with a slightly rougher surface than the original and a color that ripens from green to an intense red.

The dried Chupetinho Big Red pepper Plant

plant belongs to the species Capsicum chinense and grows as a small tree, with a sturdy, woody stem, reaching a maximum height of about 1 meter when grown in a pot. It is very leafy, with dark green oval leaves, and generally produces a couple of flowers per node. It should be noted that this is a variety not yet fully genetically stabilized.

How to Sow dried Chupetinho Big Red pepper

sowing should be done between February and April, in a heated seedbed at constant temperatures of 26-28°C, typical timing for Capsicum chinense varieties. Compared to the classic Chupetinho, Big Red tends to ripen its fruits later, so it is advisable to sow slightly earlier to ensure a complete production cycle.

How to Grow dried Chupetinho Big Red pepper

growing favors a full sun position and fertile, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Given the larger fruit size, a steady supply of potassium during the fruiting stage is helpful to support regular berry development through to full ripeness.

Tips for dried Chupetinho Big Red pepper

being a compact but very leafy plant, Chupetinho Big Red adapts well to pot growing on sunny balconies and terraces. It is important to provide staking when the plant is heavily loaded with fruit, and to maintain regular watering to support the development of peppers larger than the species average.

Diseases and Pests of dried Chupetinho Big Red pepper

like other Capsicum chinense, it can be affected by aphids, whitefly and red spider mites, especially under protected cultivation. Good drainage and proper air circulation between plants help prevent root rot and fungal diseases, especially given the abundant internal placenta found in the larger fruits.

Uses and Curiosities of dried Chupetinho Big Red pepper

Chupetinho Big Red reaches a medium-high heat level, up to 100,000 SHU on the Scoville scale. Dried, it is used to season sauces, ragùs and meat dishes, offering, thanks to its larger size, a higher yield than the classic Chupetinho in recipes that call for abundant flesh.

Properties of dried Chupetinho Big Red pepper

like all hot peppers, dried Chupetinho Big Red is rich in capsaicin, concentrated mainly in the internal placenta, which is particularly abundant in this variety. It also contains good amounts of vitamin C and carotenoids, natural antioxidants typical of ripe red peppers.
