Cotton Lavender
Cotton Lavender (Santolina chamaecyparissus) is an evergreen aromatic shrub native to the Mediterranean area, belonging to the Asteraceae family. It is highly valued in gardening for its decorative silvery-grey foliage.
The Cotton Lavender Plant
It has an upright or semi-prostrate habit, forming rounded bushes about 40-60 cm tall. The thin, woolly stems are covered with deeply divided leaves, grey-green in colour and soft to the touch.
In summer it produces small golden-yellow button-shaped flowers gathered in decorative apical inflorescences.
How to sow Cotton Lavender
The seeds are very small: covering them with a thin layer of fine soil is enough. Sow in spring or autumn, keeping the surface moist until germination.
How to grow Cotton Lavender
It prefers well-drained soil, even poor soil, in full sun. It has very low water needs: during cold periods it often relies on rainfall alone, while in summer it should only be watered during long dry spells, always letting the soil dry out between waterings.
In early spring it helps to thin out the outermost stems to keep the bush compact.
