Piccadilly-type cherry tomato is a hybrid, highly productive and vigorous variety, typical of the Vesuvius area, with fruits gathered in compact clusters, red skin and lighter flesh.
It belongs to the species Solanum lycopersicum, family Solanaceae. An indeterminate plant of Vesuvian origin, very vigorous and productive, with regular and numerous clusters.
Sow in a heated seedbed between February and March, with soil temperature between 20 and 25°C; transplant into the field after the last frosts.
It prefers fertile, well-drained soil, sunny exposure and regular watering; the plant needs staking and periodic side-shoot removal to support the numerous clusters.
Harvest is staggered from July to September; once picked, the clusters keep well for several weeks without losing quality, a typical trait of this Vesuvian type.
It can be affected by downy mildew, alternaria and blossom-end rot in case of irregular watering; crop rotation and good ventilation help prevent the main plant diseases.
The small, tasty fruits with sweet flavour are eaten fresh in salads, as a snack or to garnish dishes, and are also excellent for fresh sauces thanks to their juicy flesh.
Rich in lycopene, vitamin C and potassium, Piccadilly tomato has antioxidant properties beneficial to overall wellbeing.
