Black tiger cherry tomato is an ornamental and culinary variety with dark stripes on a green-brown background, very striking on the plate.
It belongs to the species Solanum lycopersicum, family Solanaceae. A vigorous indeterminate plant, with abundant trusses of small striped fruit.
Sow in a heated seedbed between February and March; transplant in April-May, with sunny exposure to enhance colouring.
Requires staking and regular side-shoot removal like other indeterminate types; intense sun exposure favours the development of the dark stripes.
The small round fruits show irregular dark stripes on a green-brown background even at full ripeness; harvest when slightly yielding to the touch.
Benefits from good canopy ventilation to prevent fungal diseases typical of indeterminate varieties.
Highly appreciated for its striking appearance in mixed salads and gourmet dishes; the flavour is intense and slightly smoky.
Rich in anthocyanins and lycopene responsible for its distinctive dark colouring, it has remarkable antioxidant properties.
