Atlas Asparagus is an early, high-yielding F1 hybrid of Californian origin, producing bright green spears with a slight purple tinge at the tip, cylindrical in shape with medium-large diameter.
Its botanical name is Asparagus officinalis, family Asparagaceae. It is a long-lived perennial plant, capable of producing for over ten years from the same planting, with spears harvested between April and June.
Seed sowing in a seedbed takes place in late winter, transplanting the crowns the following year from February to May, about 20-25 cm deep in furrows well fertilized with mature manure.
It prefers loose, sandy soil, free of waterlogging and rich in organic matter, in full sun. Recommended spacing is 30 cm along the row and 30 cm between rows. Harvesting only begins from the second or third year after planting.
This variety yields 20-50% more than reference standards such as UC 157, and is suited to both green and white asparagus production through earthing up.
During the vegetative phase, especially in summer, regular nitrogen supply helps support the fern-like foliage that nourishes the crowns for the following year.
It shows good tolerance to fusarium, rust, cercospora foliar disease and blight, making it reliable even in hot, dry environments and over the long term.
The spears are rich in folic acid, potassium and antioxidants, with natural diuretic properties; their low fiber content makes them particularly tender and valued both fresh and for the processing industry.
