Yardlong Bean

yardlong bean, also known as asparagus bean or snake bean, is a climbing variety that produces extremely thin pods up to 40-60 cm long. Native to Asia, it is increasingly popular in Italian gardens too, thanks to its productivity and mild flavor.

The yardlong bean Plant

Botanically it is a Vigna unguiculata subsp. sesquipedalis, part of the Fabaceae family, more closely related to the black-eyed pea than to the common green bean. It is a vigorous vine that can exceed 3 meters in height, with slender, flexible hanging pods.

It is a heat-loving plant, much more tolerant of intense summer heat than common green beans, with very rapid growth in the hottest months.

How to Sow yardlong bean

Sowing takes place from May to late June, once the soil is well warmed, placing seeds 3-4 cm deep, 3-4 seeds per pole, with poles spaced 50-60 cm apart given the plant's vigorous growth.

How to Grow yardlong bean

It needs sturdy stakes at least 2.5-3 meters tall, given its exceptional vegetative growth, and fertile, well-drained soil with balanced fertilization. Regular watering is important especially during the hottest periods, when the plant grows fastest.

Harvest begins about 60-70 days after sowing and continues throughout summer: pods should be picked while still thin, before the seeds inside start to swell.

Tips for Growing yardlong bean

Given its very rapid growth, it's helpful to set up very sturdy supports from the start, able to bear the weight of the dense foliage. Picking regularly, even every 2 days at the height of summer, keeps production steady.

Diseases and Pests of yardlong bean

It is generally more resistant to fungal diseases than common green beans, but can be susceptible to aphids and, under high humidity, to root rot. Good soil drainage remains the main defense.

Properties of yardlong bean

The pods are rich in fiber, vitamin C and folate, with a milder, slightly sweeter flavor than common green beans. They are particularly well suited to quick stir-frying in a pan or wok, typical of Asian cuisine.
