Red Beetroot is an annual herbaceous plant, grown mainly for its rounded root with an intense purple-red color, highly valued in the kitchen and known for its restorative effect on the body.
It belongs to the Chenopodiaceae family (now classified under Amaranthaceae), botanical name Beta vulgaris. The fleshy root develops in depth while the basal leaves remain close to the soil surface.
Sow directly in the field from March to mid-summer, in small groups of 2-3 seeds every 10 cm or so, burying them 1-2 cm deep. First seedlings emerge after 8-10 days.
It grows well in loose soil fertilized in autumn with mature manure, in full sun. After thinning, consistent moisture should be maintained, avoiding waterlogging which would compromise the root.
It doesn't need particular fertilization during the growing cycle, but benefits from moderate potassium for regular root development.
Thinning should be done carefully to avoid damaging the roots of neighboring plants. Mulching helps keep soil moisture constant during the hottest months.
The main enemies are aphids and cercospora leaf spot, which appears as leaf spots under high humidity conditions. Proper spacing between plants improves airflow and prevents its spread.
It is especially known for its antioxidant content, helpful for strengthening the body, along with iron and folate that make it a recommended food in cases of tiredness and fatigue.
