The Sciabola Verde Broad Bean is a highly productive selected variety, with pods 30-35 cm long, slightly curved, containing on average 8-9 tender greenish-grey beans. The flavor is particularly sweet, making it excellent even eaten raw.
Its botanical name is Vicia faba, belonging to the Fabaceae (legume) family. It is a fast-growing, vigorous annual herbaceous plant, with an upright, branching habit that can reach up to 1 meter in height, with leaves composed of 3-4 pairs of fleshy, pale green leaflets.
Direct sowing takes place between October and March, generally in autumn in temperate-climate areas and in spring in colder ones. It is recommended to sow two beans per station, since each seed produces 3-4 stems. Holes should be dug 4-8 cm deep, spaced about 30 cm apart with 80 cm between rows.
The growing cycle is about 120 days, allowing staggered harvests as the pods ripen. Cultivation typically takes place in open fields, but the variety also adapts well to home vegetable gardens.
In November, when the shoots reach about 10 cm in height, thinning out the weaker seedlings is recommended.
Timely harvesting of pods as they ripen makes the plant more productive, stimulating the formation of new flowers and pods. The slender, curved shape of the pod makes both manual harvesting and subsequent handling and packing easier.
It shows good tolerance to the main diseases affecting broad beans, reducing the need for phytosanitary treatments. It can still be subject to black aphid attacks and to rust in excessively humid conditions; good crop rotation and well-drained soil help prevent root rot.
Rich in plant protein, fiber and iron, the broad bean is a particularly nutritious food. The edible part of the seed is about 26%: it is advisable to remove the thin skin covering the beans, especially for creamy preparations, to make them more digestible.
