Red Ox Heart cabbage is a cabbage variety with a compact, colorful head, reddish outer leaves and an intensely colored heart, rich in antioxidants. It is prized both for its decorative look in the garden and its bold flavor in the kitchen.
Botanically it is a Brassica oleracea var. capitata f. rubra, part of the Brassicaceae family. It is a biennial plant grown as an annual, with a very colorful, compact head that can weigh up to 2 kg, featuring smooth, waxy red-purple leaves.
It is a hardy variety, with good resistance to splitting and excellent suitability for refrigerated storage after harvest.
Sowing takes place in a seedbed, burying the seeds about 1-2 cm deep. It is generally grown from March to October, with successive sowings to extend the harvest period. Germination occurs within 7-12 days, followed by thinning out the weaker seedlings.
Transplanting takes place once seedlings reach 10-15 cm in height, spacing them about 45x45 cm apart to support head development. It favors fertile, cool, well-drained soil in a sunny position.
Harvest generally occurs 80-85 days after transplanting, once the head is richly colored and compact; it is well suited to prolonged refrigerated storage.
Watering should be kept consistent during dry periods, while avoiding waterlogging. Balanced fertilization at transplanting supports head development and the intensity of the red color. Companion planting with lettuce, celery and aromatic herbs helps keep some pests away.
Common pests include cabbage root flies, cabbage white caterpillars, aphids and slugs. Among fungal diseases, clubroot is worth noting, which should be prevented through crop rotation and prompt removal of infected plants.
The leaves of this cabbage are particularly rich in anthocyanins, vitamins and antioxidants, with a low calorie content. It is excellent eaten raw in salads to preserve its vivid color and nutritional properties, or cooked in soups and side dishes.
