Purple Carrot is the most ancient carrot variety, with purple skin and orange or reddish flesh depending on selection; the flavor is similar to the orange carrot but with less sugar.
Botanical name Daucus carota, family Apiaceae. It is the ancestor of modern orange carrots, grown in Afghanistan as early as 5,000 years ago and spread across Europe from the 12th century onward.
Sow from March to July, directly in the field, in rows 25-30 cm apart, burying seeds about 1 cm deep.
It prefers loose, sandy soil, since overly hard or clayey soils deform the roots and compromise their regular development. Fertilize with compost at least 4 months before sowing.
Soil should always be kept moist, avoiding waterlogging which favors root rot; thinning should be done while seedlings are still small.
Careful soil preparation, mixing sand and compost, is the most important step to obtain straight, well-formed roots.
Like other carrots, it can be affected by carrot fly and root rot in case of waterlogging; good crop rotation reduces the risk.
Its distinctive color comes from anthocyanins, powerful antioxidants of the flavonoid family that support cardiovascular health and microcirculation, fighting free radicals.
