Barcellona White Cauliflower is a Mediterranean white cauliflower variety, valued for its hardiness and adaptability to the hot, dry climates typical of southern Europe's coastal areas. The curd is compact, bright white, with a fine texture suited to both fresh consumption and processing.
Barcellona White Cauliflower has a sturdy habit and medium-sized foliage, enough to protect the curd without stifling its development. The plant adapts well to summer transplanting thanks to good heat tolerance, a trait that sets it apart from more delicate varieties suited only to autumn-winter cycles.
Transplanting usually takes place from June to September, with a medium-early growing cycle of around 70-90 days from transplanting. Seedbed sowing requires a light, well-drained substrate, with seedlings transplanted once they reach 4-5 true leaves.
Barcellona White Cauliflower needs fertile, well-drained soil, with regular watering especially during the hottest periods, when water stress can compromise curd compactness. This variety's hardy genetics make it more heat-tolerant than other types of white cauliflower.
During the hottest months, light shading helps prevent the curd from yellowing or overheating. Harvest when the florets are still tightly closed, before they begin to open, cutting the head with a few protective leaves attached.
Like other cauliflower varieties, Barcellona white cauliflower can be affected by cabbage white caterpillars, aphids and flea beetle, as well as bolting stress if exposed to excessively high temperatures at a young age. Staggered sowing and good water management significantly reduce these risks.
Barcellona White Cauliflower is a light, nutritious vegetable, rich in vitamin C and fibre, with a modest calorie content. It suits many kitchen preparations, from classic steaming to gratin-style recipes, while keeping its nutritional qualities intact.
