White Taroke Cauliflower is a variety with a slow, late growing cycle, particularly resistant even to harsh climates. It stands out for its pure white inflorescence, wrapped in pleasant light green foliage.
Its botanical name is Brassica oleracea var. botrytis, belonging to the Cruciferae family (Brassicaceae). The plant is sturdy and well adapted to adverse climatic conditions, with light green foliage that effectively wraps and protects the head throughout its long growing cycle.
Being a late variety, transplanting should be scheduled well ahead of the expected harvest, generally between June and September. The slow growing cycle requires patience, but rewards with heads of excellent quality and holding capacity.
White Taroke cauliflower prefers medium-textured, cool, well-drained soils with a pH between 6.5 and 7.5. Its good resistance to harsh climates makes it suitable even for areas with cold winters or variable weather, provided the soil stays moist during the early growth stages.
Harvest when the florets of the head are still tightly closed and compact, cutting plants at the collar and leaving a few protective leaves for handling.
Given its long time in the field, it is important to keep the soil free of weeds and periodically monitor plant health. Respect transplanting distances (50-60 cm along the row, 60-80 cm between rows) to encourage even head development.
Like other Brassicaceae, it can be affected by downy mildew and bacterial diseases, favoured by prolonged humidity. Cabbage white caterpillars are the most common pests: good weed control and targeted Bacillus thuringiensis treatments help keep them in check.
White Taroke cauliflower is low in calories yet highly nutritious, rich in vitamin C, fibre and minerals such as potassium and phosphorus. Regular cauliflower consumption contributes to a good intake of natural antioxidants, beneficial for overall wellbeing.
