Round Beetroot is a variety with a tuberous root of globe shape and deep red skin; the inner flesh is fleshy, red-violet in color with characteristic circular ring patterns.
The Round Beetroot Plant
Botanical name Beta vulgaris, family Amaranthaceae. Its round, regular root shape makes it one of the most widely grown varieties for home gardens and canning.
How to Sow Round Beetroot
Sow from March to July, in rows 25-30 cm apart, burying seeds 2 cm deep. Thanks to its regular round shape, germination is fairly uniform, taking 8-12 days.
How to Grow Round Beetroot
It thrives in loose, deep soil free of stones that could deform the root. Thin out leaving 10 cm between plants to encourage the round shape typical of the variety.
Regular watering, without excessive swings, is essential to obtain well-formed roots free of cracks.
Tips for Growing Round Beetroot
Harvest when the root reaches 6-7 cm in diameter: beyond this size, the flesh tends to become more fibrous and less tender.
Diseases and Pests of Round Beetroot
It is mainly affected by waterlogging, which can favor root rot, and aphid attacks on young leaves. Good drainage prevents most problems.

The red-violet flesh is rich in betalains, natural antioxidants, as well as folate and potassium; it is traditionally used for canning thanks to its regular shape.
