Popcorn Corn

Popcorn Corn is a variety specifically selected for producing crunchy, tasty popcorn. The kernel structure is particularly compact, with a thin but resistant outer shell that allows it to pop perfectly when heated.

The Popcorn Corn Plant

Its botanical name is Zea mays everta, belonging to the Poaceae (grass) family, the same as wheat, barley and rice. The plant reaches an average height of 2-2.5 m, with a segmented cane-like stem and leaves 70-120 cm long.

Unlike sweet corn for the cob, popcorn kernels have a lower starch content and higher fat and protein content, an essential condition for the kernel to pop properly when heated.

How to Sow Popcorn Corn

Sowing takes place from April to June, once the soil has warmed up and the risk of late frost has passed. Sow 2 seeds per station about 2-3 cm deep, spacing 30-40 cm between plants and rows, then remove the weaker seedlings after germination.

How to Grow Popcorn Corn

It prefers well-drained, nutrient-rich soil in a sunny, wind-sheltered position. Watering should be regular, avoiding waterlogging. Harvest takes place about 100-120 days after sowing, when the corn silk begins to turn brown.

To avoid cross-pollination, which would compromise the kernels' popping ability, it is important not to grow popcorn corn next to sweet corn varieties.

Tips for Growing Popcorn Corn

After harvesting, proper drying of the kernels is essential to ensure good popping yield when cooking. The ears should be twisted off with a wrist-turning motion, and well-dried kernels can be stored for a long time.

Diseases and Pests of the Popcorn Corn

If sown directly in the field, seeds can fall prey to mice and birds. The plant can also be subject to European corn borer attacks and to root rot in case of prolonged waterlogging; good crop rotation helps prevent the main plant diseases.

Properties of the Popcorn Corn

Naturally gluten-free, popcorn corn is an excellent source of fiber and antioxidants, perfect for preparing healthy homemade snacks without the additives often found in packaged products.
