The Centurion Sweet Corn F1 is an early, highly productive plant capable of producing long ears. The kernels, small in size, take on an intense yellow color and a sweet, juicy flavor.
Its botanical name is Zea mays saccharata, belonging to the Poaceae (grass) family. It is an early F1 hybrid variety, with a cycle of 85-90 days, reaching a height of 2-2.20 meters.
Sowing can be done either in a protected seedbed or directly in the open field, starting from April-May once the soil has warmed up. Sow 2 seeds per station about 2-3 cm deep, spacing 30-40 cm between plants.
It prefers well-drained, nutrient-rich soil in a sunny, wind-sheltered position. Watering should be regular, avoiding waterlogging, especially during flowering and ear filling.
Thanks to its early cycle, harvest takes place as soon as 85-90 days after sowing, when the corn silk begins to darken.
To avoid cross-pollination with other corn varieties (especially popcorn types), it is advisable to keep some distance between different crops. Harvest should be timely, once the ears have reached full milky ripeness, to ensure maximum sweetness of the kernels.
Like other corn varieties, it can be subject to European corn borer attacks and to root rot in case of prolonged waterlogging. Good crop rotation and well-drained soil help prevent the main plant diseases.
Rich in carbohydrates, fiber and antioxidants, sweet corn is an energizing, naturally gluten-free food, excellent eaten fresh, boiled or grilled.
