The Apollo Medium-Long Cucumber is a hybrid variety with an early, highly productive cycle, suitable for both open field and greenhouse cultivation. The fruits are elongated and cylindrical, dark green with a spiny skin.
Its botanical name is Cucumis sativus, belonging to the Cucurbitaceae family. It is a vigorous climbing plant, with a hairy quadrangular stem and large leaves with long petioles.
Sow in a protected seedbed from February to April, then transplant once the first two true leaves appear, or sow directly in the open field from April to June, about 2 cm deep.
It adapts well to both vertical cultivation on stakes, ideal for saving space and easing harvest, and horizontal cultivation with mulching. It requires fertile, well-drained soil, sunny exposure and regular watering.
Thanks to its early cycle, harvest can begin just a few weeks after flowering, with abundant production over an extended period.
It is best to harvest the fruits while still young and firm, to ensure maximum crispness. Regular harvesting also encourages the plant to keep producing new fruit for a longer period.
Like other cucurbits, it can be affected by powdery mildew, downy mildew and aphid or spider mite infestations. Good air circulation between plants and preventive treatments help contain the main plant diseases.
Rich in water and low in calories, cucumber is a refreshing, detoxifying vegetable, a source of potassium and vitamin K, perfect for salads and light summer dishes.
