A productive cylindrical-elongated variety, the Ideal long black eggplant is prized for its glossy black skin and firm, low-seed flesh, ideal for grilling or frying slices.
It belongs to the species Solanum melongena, family Solanaceae. An annual herbaceous plant with an upright, bushy habit, oval leaves and purple flowers; the elongated fruits can reach 25-30 cm.
Sow in a heated seedbed from February to March, at around 25-28°C, transplanting seedlings into the field only after the last frost, once the soil has warmed up.
It prefers very sunny spots and fertile, loose, well-drained soils; it needs regular watering and balanced fertilising, with sturdy stakes to support fruit development.
Harvest when the fruits are glossy and firm to the touch: over-ripe eggplants become hard and develop excess seeds, losing quality.
Like other nightshades it can be affected by Colorado potato beetle, red spider mite and aphids; waterlogging can lead to root rot and wilt diseases.
The growing cycle lasts 150-240 days; with its long, woody stalk and the wide spacing it requires, it is a vigorous crop with generous yields.
A low-calorie vegetable rich in fibre, potassium and antioxidants such as the anthocyanins in its dark skin, it supports satiety and healthy digestion.
