A productive variety rich in anthocyanins, Brillant eggplant produces rounded fruits with glossy, elegant purple skin, among the most widespread and popular round eggplants.
It belongs to the species Solanum melongena, family Solanaceae. An upright herbaceous plant that can exceed a metre in height, with semi-spherical fruits in a vivid purple colour.
Sow in a heated seedbed between February and March, transplanting into the field from April-May, once the risk of late frost has passed.
It prefers fertile, well-drained soil, sunny exposure and regular watering; balanced fertilising supports the development of round fruits that can reach up to 500 g.
The glossy skin and rich anthocyanin content make the fruits particularly decorative: harvest when the skin is taut and glossy for the best quality.
Like other eggplants it can be affected by Colorado potato beetle, aphids and red spider mite; good soil drainage prevents root rot after heavy rain.
Its tender white flesh with a sweet flavour makes it ideal for classic preparations like parmigiana, grilled eggplant or preserved in oil.
Rich in fibre that supports digestion, Brillant eggplant is also suitable for low-calorie diets thanks to its low calorie content and antioxidant phytonutrients.
Per 100 grams, Brillant eggplant provides about 24 kcal, 1 g protein, 5.7 g carbohydrates, 0.2 g fat and 3 g fibre.
