A traditional local variety from Sicily, Seta eggplant is valued for its thin, pale purple skin and soft, tasty flesh, with a milder flavour than classic dark eggplants.
It belongs to the species Solanum melongena, family Solanaceae. A moderately vigorous, compact plant with few spines on the leaves, producing oval-elongated fruits with a rusty-white calyx, a distinctive trait of this cultivar.
Sow in a heated seedbed between February and March, transplanting into the field or pots from April-May, once the risk of late frost has passed.
It prefers medium-textured soil rich in organic matter and well drained; thanks to the plant's compact habit it also suits container growing, with harvest about 60 days after transplanting.
The thin, pale skin is less resistant to bruising than darker varieties: harvest carefully, cutting the fruit with a piece of stalk attached to extend its shelf life.
Like other eggplants it can be affected by Colorado potato beetle, aphids and red spider mite; the plant's few spines make inspection and harvesting easier.
Its soft, tasty flesh is ideal for traditional Sicilian dishes, from caponata to stuffed eggplant rolls, as well as light frying since the thin skin needs no peeling.
Rich in fibre that supports digestion, Seta eggplant is also suitable for low-calorie diets thanks to its low calorie content and the antioxidant phytonutrients typical of Solanaceae.
