The quintessential summer vegetable, oval black eggplant belongs to the Solanaceae family and is rich in water, ideal for detox diets: it has a purple-black colour, ovoid shape and medium size, with fruits reaching about 300 g.
It belongs to the species Solanum melongena. An upright herbaceous plant of medium vigour, producing regular ovoid fruits of a more contained size compared to other larger black varieties.
Sow in a heated seedbed between February and March, transplanting into the field or greenhouse from April-May, once night temperatures are stably above 12°C.
It can be grown in greenhouse or open field; it prefers fertile, well-drained soil, regular watering and sunny exposure for optimal fruit development.
The medium, uniform fruit size makes this variety particularly suited to steady harvests over time: pick when the skin is still taut and glossy.
Like other eggplants it can be affected by Colorado potato beetle, aphids and red spider mite; good soil drainage prevents root rot after heavy rain.
Thanks to its rich water content and versatile flesh, it is suitable for detox diets and works well grilled, baked or preserved, keeping its typical texture.
Rich in fibre that supports digestion, oval black eggplant is also suitable for low-calorie diets thanks to its low calorie content and high water content.
Per 100 grams, oval black eggplant provides about 24 kcal, 1 g protein, 5.7 g carbohydrates, 0.2 g fat and 3 g fibre.
