A very vigorous and productive variety, Melana long black eggplant develops elongated fruits with a purple-to-black colour and a bold flavour, among the most versatile types in the kitchen.
It belongs to the species Solanum melongena, family Solanaceae. A productive plant that needs wide plant spacing to develop fully, plus sturdy supports once the fruits reach larger sizes.
Sow in a heated seedbed between February and March, transplanting into the field or pots from April-May, once the risk of late frost has passed.
For ideal development it needs large, well-fertilised soil with ample spacing between plants; regular watering supports the fruits' elongation right up to harvest.
Given its productivity, it helps to set up stakes or supports from the early growth stages, so the heaviest-laden branches are held without hindering their development.
Like other eggplants it can be affected by Colorado potato beetle, aphids and red spider mite; good soil drainage prevents root rot after heavy rain.
Its bold flavour and firm flesh make it the perfect choice for grilling, frying and dishes where the eggplant's intense taste should stand out.
Rich in fibre that supports digestion, Melana eggplant is also suitable for low-calorie diets thanks to its low calorie content and antioxidant phytonutrients.
Per 100 grams, Melana eggplant provides about 24 kcal, 1 g protein, 5.7 g carbohydrates, 0.2 g fat and 3 g fibre.
