A compact plant with vigorous branches, Gascona long lilac eggplant produces elongated fruits with a distinctive light purple colour and slightly golden white flesh, about 25 cm long and around 300 g in weight.
It belongs to the species Solanum melongena, family Solanaceae. A very sturdy plant, resistant to root diseases, with a compact habit that makes it suitable for container growing as well as the open field.
Sow in a heated seedbed between February and March, transplanting into the field, greenhouse or pots from April-May, once the risk of late frost has passed.
It grows very well both in greenhouse and open field; it prefers fertile, well-drained soil, with regular watering supporting the high productivity typical of this variety.
Thanks to the plant's sturdiness and resistance to root diseases, it requires less care than other varieties, making it a practical choice even for growers with limited space.
It is particularly resistant to root diseases; it can still be affected by Colorado potato beetle, aphids and red spider mite, so good soil drainage is still advisable.
Its slightly golden white flesh with a mild flavour makes it versatile in the kitchen, excellent grilled, fried or used for parmigiana and rolled dishes.
Rich in fibre that supports digestion, Gascona eggplant is also suitable for low-calorie diets thanks to its low calorie content and antioxidant phytonutrients.
Per 100 grams, Gascona eggplant provides about 24 kcal, 1 g protein, 5.7 g carbohydrates, 0.2 g fat and 3 g fibre.
