A very productive variety, Elly long black eggplant stands out for its glossy purple-to-black colour and elongated shape, with fruits reaching up to 25 cm in length.
It belongs to the species Solanum melongena, family Solanaceae. A highly productive, adaptable plant that develops elongated fruits with a particularly uniform glossy skin.
Sow in a heated seedbed between February and March, transplanting into the field or greenhouse from April-May, once the risk of late frost has passed.
It suits both open-field and greenhouse cultivation; it prefers fertile, well-drained soil, regular watering and sunny exposure for optimal fruit development.
The plant's high productivity calls for regular fertilising to sustain the development of a large number of fruits without compromising quality.
Like other eggplants it can be affected by Colorado potato beetle, aphids and red spider mite; good soil drainage prevents root rot after heavy rain.
Its elongated shape and glossy skin make it ideal for grilling and frying, as well as classic preparations like parmigiana and rolled dishes.
Rich in fibre that supports digestion, Elly eggplant is also suitable for low-calorie diets thanks to its low calorie content and antioxidant phytonutrients.
Per 100 grams, Elly eggplant provides about 24 kcal, 1 g protein, 5.7 g carbohydrates, 0.2 g fat and 3 g fibre.
