Grown for generations in family vegetable gardens for its reliability, Elly eggplant delivers steady harvests and slender fruits prized for their firm flesh and low seed content.
It belongs to the species Solanum melongena, family Solanaceae, the same as tomatoes and peppers. An annual herbaceous plant that can exceed a metre in height, with broad leaves and lilac flowers.
Sow in a heated seedbed between February and March, with soil temperature between 20 and 30°C; transplant once the seedling reaches 15-20 cm in height.
Recommended plant spacing is about 60 cm; steady watering, especially during fruit swelling, ensures an abundant harvest from July to August.
Harvest while the skin is still taut and glossy: fruits left too long on the plant tend to develop more seeds and less prized flesh.
Like other eggplants it can be affected by Colorado potato beetle, aphids and red spider mite; good soil drainage prevents root rot after heavy rain.
Its firm, low-seed flesh is perfect sliced and fried, as well as for parmigiana and the classic oven-baked stuffed eggplant.
Made up of over 90% water, Elly eggplant is low in calories and rich in fibre and micronutrients such as potassium and vitamin C, plus antioxidant phytonutrients.
