A vigorous, generously yielding plant, Rania striped oval eggplant produces slightly elongated ovoid fruits with white skin marked by bold, distinct purple stripes, making it instantly recognisable among zebra-patterned varieties.
It belongs to the species Solanum melongena, family Solanaceae. A sturdy, well-branched plant able to carry an abundant number of fruits with a strikingly decorative colour contrast.
Sow in a heated seedbed in spring, generally between February and March, transplanting into the field or greenhouse once the risk of late frost has passed.
It prefers fertile, well-drained soil, sunny exposure and regular watering; the fruits are usually ready for harvest already in summer, just a few weeks after flowering.
The purple stripes tend to intensify with direct sun exposure: good light throughout the growing period enhances both the fruit's ornamental appeal and its flavour.
Like other eggplants it can be affected by Colorado potato beetle, aphids and red spider mite; good soil drainage prevents root rot after heavy rain.
The strong white-purple contrast makes it perfect for dishes where presentation matters as much as flavour, and it's also excellent grilled or oven-baked with the skin left on.
Rich in fibre that supports digestion, Rania eggplant is also suitable for low-calorie diets thanks to its low calorie content and antioxidant phytonutrients.
