Orange cauliflower is a colourful variety with an intense yellow-orange curd, rich in beta-carotene, combining ornamental value with high nutritional properties.
Its botanical name is Brassica oleracea var. botrytis, belonging to the Cruciferae family (Brassicaceae). The compact curd shows an orange colour due to a natural mutation that increases beta-carotene content compared to white varieties.
The growing cycle is around 90-100 days from transplanting, with staggered sowing from spring to late summer for autumn and winter harvests.
It prefers cool, deep, well-fed soils, with sunny exposure and regular watering, especially during curd formation.
Keep soil moisture constant to promote uniform growth and intense curd colour. Respect transplanting distances for good airflow.
Like other Brassicaceae, it can be affected by cabbage white caterpillars, aphids and flea beetles; good airflow between plants prevents fungal diseases.
Orange cauliflower is particularly rich in beta-carotene, a precursor of vitamin A, as well as minerals, fibre and vitamin C. It has notable antioxidant properties.
