Dulcita romaine lettuce is a compact-headed romaine with a particularly sweet flavour, as the name suggests, bred to combine the typical crunch of romaine with a less bitter taste.
A Lactuca sativa var. longifolia variety, romaine type: forms an elongated, compact head with thick, crisp leaves and a clearly visible central rib.
Sow from February to September, transplanting after about 25-30 days from seedbed sowing; optimal germination between 15 and 20°C.
Needs regular, consistent watering, especially while the head is forming, to maintain the crunch and sweet flavour it's known for.
Harvest when the head is well formed and firm to the touch; avoid delaying harvest in summer to prevent bitter notes from developing.
Like other romaine types, monitor for aphids, slugs and downy mildew in excessively humid conditions.
Thanks to its sweet flavour and crunch, it's particularly popular in fresh salads and for preparing the classic Caesar salad.
Like other romaine lettuces, it's rich in vitamin A, vitamin K and folate, with a good fibre content.
About 17 kcal per 100 g, with good fibre and potassium content, typical of romaine lettuces.
