Duna romaine lettuce is a vigorous, productive romaine, valued for its elongated, well-closed head, with intense green outer leaves and a lighter, more tender inner heart.
A Lactuca sativa var. longifolia variety, romaine type: develops an upright, elongated head with thick, crisp leaves, resistant to early bolting.
Sow from February to September, either direct or in seedbed for transplanting; optimal germination between 15 and 20°C.
Prefers cool, well-drained soil with regular watering; good bolt resistance allows sowing even in the warmer months.
For a tighter, crunchier head, some growers tie the outer leaves together during the final growth stage, a traditional technique for blanching romaine lettuces.
Watch for aphids, slugs and downy mildew in high humidity conditions; good airflow between rows prevents leaf rot.
Thanks to its good bolt resistance, it's one of the most widely grown romaine lettuces even in summer, when other varieties would tend to flower early.
Like other romaine lettuces, it's rich in vitamin A, vitamin K and folate, with a good fibre content.
About 17 kcal per 100 g, with good fibre and potassium content, typical of elongated-leaf romaine lettuces.
