Pepito Netted Melon

The Pepito netted melon is a medium-large variety, round-oval in shape, characterised by a vigorous and hardy plant. The fruit has a netted skin divided into well-marked "slices", with the typical webbed texture of cantalupensis varieties, and intense orange, sweet and fragrant flesh.

The Pepito Melon Plant

Cucumis melo 'Pepito' belongs to the Cucurbitaceae family. It is an annual herbaceous plant with robust creeping stems and branched tendrils, endowed with great vegetative vigour that allows it to produce abundantly even in less than optimal climate conditions. The fruits generally weigh 1.5-2 kg, with well-marked ribs divided by a superficial netted texture and firm, juicy orange flesh.

How to Sow Pepito Melon

Sowing takes place from April to May, directly in the field once the soil reaches at least 18°C, or in a protected seedbed from March. Seeds should be buried about 2-3 centimetres deep. Germination occurs in 6-10 days at optimal temperatures of 25°C. Harvesting generally takes place 80-90 days after sowing.

How to Grow Pepito Melon

Pepito melon prefers fertile, well-draining soil, in a sunny position. Thanks to its hardiness, this variety tolerates less than optimal growing conditions well compared to others. Watering should be regular during growth, progressively decreasing towards ripening. Potassium fertilising promotes sweeter fruits with better organoleptic quality.

Tips for Pepito Melon

Thanks to the plant's vigour, Pepito melon produces abundantly even on soils that are not particularly rich. It is still recommended not to overdo the number of fruits per plant in order to maintain uniform size. The fruit is ready for harvest when it separates easily from the stem and the netting is fully developed across the entire surface.

Diseases and Pests of Pepito Melon

Thanks to its natural hardiness, Pepito melon shows fair resistance to the main fungal diseases such as powdery mildew and downy mildew, although it remains susceptible in conditions of particularly high humidity. Aphids and whiteflies remain the most common pests to monitor, often being vectors of viral diseases that can compromise production.

Uses and Curiosities of Pepito Melon

Pepito melon is perfect eaten fresh in slices, perhaps paired with cured ham, or used in fruit salads and summer smoothies. Thanks to its excellent productivity, it is one of the most widely grown varieties among amateur gardeners, particularly appreciated by those seeking an abundant, reliable harvest even with minimal experience.

Properties of Pepito Melon

Composed of about 90% water, Pepito melon is a highly hydrating fruit, perfect for the summer months. It is rich in beta-carotene and vitamin C, powerful natural antioxidants. Its good potassium content contributes to electrolyte balance and the body's cardiovascular wellbeing.
