Pandora Golden Onion

The Pandora golden onion is a highly productive plant, giving large bulbs with golden-yellow outer skins and white-beige inner flesh. It is a variety suited to long storage, among the most versatile in the kitchen.

The Pandora Golden Onion Plant

Allium cepa Pandora belongs to the Amaryllidaceae family. It is a biennial herbaceous plant, grown as an annual, with shallow, fibrous roots and hollow cylindrical leaves of blue-green colour. The large bulb develops from the thickening of the leaf base.

How to Sow Pandora Golden Onion

Sowing takes place from September to April, either in a protected seedbed for autumn sowings or directly in the field for spring sowings, burying seeds about 1-2 centimetres deep.

How to Grow Pandora Golden Onion

It prefers medium-textured, cool, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Having very shallow roots, the plant is sensitive to water stress and needs frequent but limited watering, to be suspended about 25-30 days before harvest to favour bulb storage life.

Tips for Pandora Golden Onion

To obtain large bulbs with good storage life it is important to avoid late nitrogen application, which could compromise keeping quality. Harvesting is done once the leaves begin to dry and bend downwards, a sign of full bulb maturity.

Diseases and Pests of Pandora Golden Onion

Pandora onion can be subject to downy mildew and neck rot, especially in conditions of excessive humidity. Common pests include onion fly and thrips, to be monitored especially in the early stages of bulb development.

Uses and Curiosities of Pandora Golden Onion

Thanks to its strong yet tasty flavour, Pandora golden onion is the most versatile in the kitchen, used for sautéing, slow cooking and flavouring a wide range of dishes. It also stores very well thanks to the long keeping quality of its bulbs.
