Purple Ufo powder is made by grinding this unusually shaped pepper, resembling a small flying saucer, hence its name, with a distinctive purple color.
The source pepper, Capsicum annuum, grows on a sturdy plant shaped like a small tree, up to 60 centimeters tall, with a dark purple stem and very leafy oval foliage.
Seeds for fruit production are started between February and March, transplanting after the last frosts.
An ornamental as well as productive plant, it grows well in pots; it needs regular watering and a sunny spot to bring out the fruit's coloring.
The fruits, wide at the top and tapered below, start out purple and turn deep red-purple at full ripeness; they must be fully dried before grinding.
Waterlogging should be avoided, as it favors root rot; generally resistant when grown with good drainage.
Purple Ufo powder has a medium-low heat level, around 20,000 SHU, with a mild flavor close to sweet bell pepper: excellent for light seasonings and for those who prefer a gentler heat.
Contains capsaicin in moderate amounts and anthocyanins responsible for the fruit's purple color.
