Thunder Mountain Longhorn powder is made by grinding the world's longest chili pepper, native to the Chinese mountain range it is named after.
The source pepper, Capsicum annuum, grows on a very tall plant, up to 150 centimeters, leafy, with dark green oval leaves pointing downward.
Seeds for fruit production are started between February and March, transplanting after the last frosts.
Given its considerable height, a support stake is recommended; it needs regular watering and a sunny position for optimal growth.
The thin, lean fruits can exceed 30 centimeters in length and turn from green to red at full ripeness; they must be fully dried before grinding.
Waterlogging should be avoided as it favors root rot; a generally resistant, productive plant.
Thunder Mountain Longhorn powder has a low heat level, around 15,000 SHU, with a fresh, herbaceous and fairly complex flavor: great for light sauces and delicate seasonings.
Contains capsaicin in modest amounts and carotenoids responsible for the red color of the dried fruits.
