More info

Dried California Reaper Red Pepper

Dried California Reaper Red Pepper is the dried version of an F5 cultivar of the species Capsicum chinense, born from crossing Carolina Reaper with Yais Ghost Scorpion Red, itself an extremely hot hybrid obtained from Bhut Jolokia and Trinidad Scorpion. The result is a super hot pepper, around 1,600,000 Scoville Heat Units, which keeps the characteristic scorpion tail typical of Carolina Reaper.

The California Reaper Red Plant

The bush is vigorous, with dark green leaves and white flowers, typical of super hot Capsicum chinense. Fruits, deep red at full ripeness, keep the wrinkled skin and small pointed tail inherited from Carolina Reaper.

How to Sow California Reaper Red

Sow in a heated seedbed between February and March, keeping temperatures constant at 25-28°C: Capsicum chinense germination is slow, often 3-4 weeks.

How to Grow California Reaper Red

Transplant from May, once night temperatures stay stably above 15°C. It prefers full sun, wind shelter and fertile, well-drained soil rich in organic matter.

Heat Level and Care Tips for California Reaper Red

Given its extreme heat, always handle fruits with disposable gloves. During drying, keep the product away from direct drafts and excessive heat sources to preserve color and aroma.

Diseases and Pests of California Reaper Red

Like other Capsicum chinense, it can be affected by aphids, spider mites and whitefly, especially under protected cultivation with poor ventilation.

Properties and Uses of California Reaper Red

Capsaicin, responsible for the heat, has thermogenic properties and boosts metabolism. Dried California Reaper Red pepper, with a strong bold flavor, is used as powder, sauces or concentrated extracts, always in minimal doses.
