Dried Testa Rossa Drax Pepper is the dried version of a pepper belonging to the Drax group, super-hot crosses of Capsicum chinense, characterized by bumpy pods with the typical scorpion shape and bright red color at maturity.
The plant is vigorous, with small, wrinkled, bumpy fruits, often ending in a small curved tail typical of scorpion varieties. At maturity they turn a bright red color.
Sow in a heated seedbed between February and March, keeping temperatures constant at 25-28°C: Capsicum chinense germination usually takes 2-4 weeks.
Transplant from May, once night temperatures stay stably above 15°C. It prefers full sun, fertile well-drained soil, regular watering and periodic fertilization.
The heat level is very high: disposable gloves are essential when handling the fruits, avoiding any contact with eyes and mucous membranes.
Like other Capsicum chinense, it can be affected by aphids, spider mites and whitefly, especially under protected cultivation with poor ventilation.
The capsaicin in the fruits has thermogenic properties and boosts metabolism. Dried Testa Rossa Drax pepper, with an intense, fruity flavor, is used as powder or as a base for extremely hot sauces.
