Dried Habanero Orange Blob Pepper is an unusually shaped Capsicum chinense cultivar, possibly the result of a spontaneous cross with Capsicum baccatum, standing out clearly from other Habaneros in appearance.
The plant grows up to 70 cm tall, spreading widely, and is robust with oval leaves showing large veins covered in fine hairs; it produces numerous small white flowers curved downward. The fruits have a spinning-top shape, wide at the base and stubby, ending in a thin point, turning orange at maturity.
Sow in a heated seedbed between February and March, keeping temperatures constant at 25-28°C until germination, which usually takes 2-3 weeks.
Transplant from April to June, once temperatures start to rise steadily. It prefers full sun, permeable fertile soil, with a late maturation: the first fruits fully form between September and October.
The heat level is high (about 250,000-300,000 SHU), with a burn that fades quickly: gloves are still essential when handling the fruits, avoiding contact with eyes and mucous membranes.
It can be affected by aphids, spider mites and whitefly; avoiding wetting the foliage during watering reduces the risk of fungal disease.
The high capsaicin content gives strong thermogenic and metabolism-stimulating properties. Dried Habanero Orange Blob pepper, prized for its fruity, sweet-and-sour flavor, is used ground into powder or flakes for sauces to pair with cheeses and meats.
