Dried Habanero Chocolate Long Pepper is a Capsicum chinense variant larger than the classic Habanero Chocolate, recognizable for its noticeably more elongated fruits and dark brown color at maturity.
The plant is resilient and fairly tall, reaching about 90 cm in height with a sturdy, non-woody stem; it is very leafy, with drooping oval leaves, and grows easily even in pots. The fruits are larger and longer than the Habanero Chocolate, reaching up to 12 cm in length and 6 cm in diameter, turning from light green to dark brown at maturity.
Sow in a heated seedbed between February and March, keeping temperatures constant at 25-28°C until germination, which usually takes 2-3 weeks.
Transplant from April to June, once temperatures start to rise steadily. It prefers a sunny, well-ventilated spot, with moderate watering to avoid waterlogging; it usually matures toward the end of summer.
The heat level is high (about 200,000-350,000 SHU): gloves are essential when handling the fruits, carefully avoiding contact with eyes and mucous membranes.
It can be affected by aphids, spider mites and whitefly; avoiding wetting the foliage during watering reduces the risk of fungal disease.
The high capsaicin content gives strong thermogenic and metabolism-stimulating properties. Dried Habanero Chocolate Long pepper, prized for a smokier aroma that is more subtle than the classic Chocolate, is used ground into powder or flakes for very spicy sauces.
