Dried Pimenta da Neyde Pepper is a hybrid of Capsicum chinense and Capsicum annuum, of Brazilian origin, born spontaneously in the garden of Mrs. Neyde Hidalgo, after whom it is named.
The plant has a branched, small-tree habit, with a long, flexible stem that can reach up to 2 meters in height; the oval-lanceolate leaves are dark purple with silvery highlights, and the flowers have white petals streaked with purple. The fruits, elongated and 4-6 cm long, are very dark purple, almost black and, a rare trait, do not change shade during ripening.
Sow in a heated seedbed between February and March, keeping temperatures constant at 25-28°C until germination, which usually takes 2-3 weeks.
Transplant from April to June, once temperatures start to rise steadily. It adapts well to the Italian climate and shows good cold tolerance, though in Northern Italy it is advisable to shelter the plant in winter; it is resistant to common pests and diseases.
The heat level is medium-high (about 150,000-250,000 SHU): gloves are essential when handling the fruits, carefully avoiding contact with eyes and mucous membranes.
It can be affected by aphids, spider mites and whitefly; avoiding wetting the foliage during watering reduces the risk of fungal disease.
The high capsaicin content gives strong thermogenic and metabolism-stimulating properties. Dried Pimenta da Neyde pepper, prized for its fruity flavor with apple notes and a dark chocolate aftertaste, is used ground into powder or flakes for spicy jams and sauces.
