The dried Mechico pepper is an ornamental variety native to Mexico, highly valued for the multicolored look of its fruits. During ripening, the small conical fruits continuously change color, turning from green to yellow, orange, purple and finally red at full ripeness.
plant belongs to the species Capsicum annuum and has an upright, bushy, compact habit, reaching a maximum height of about 40-50 cm. The foliage is dense and leafy, with branches and stem that tend to lignify as the plant grows.
sowing should be done in a heated seedbed, with transplanting to open ground or a final pot between April and June. The first fruits are harvested toward the end of summer, once the plants have completed their growth cycle.
growing favors a sunny spot, either in a pot or in open ground, indoors or outdoors. Before transplanting, seedlings should be kept sheltered from direct sun; after transplanting they need regular watering, avoiding water stagnation.
thanks to its compact size and the vivid, multicolored fruits, Mechico is ideal as an ornamental balcony plant or for creating small decorative hedges when planted in rows. It also adapts well to urban settings with limited space.
like other Capsicum annuum varieties, it can occasionally be affected by aphids, red spider mites and, under excessive humidity, root rot. Good air circulation and well-drained soil prevent the main issues.
Mechico reaches a medium heat level, around 70,000 SHU on the Scoville scale. Dried, it is consumed ground into powder or in flakes, keeping a unique flavor and intense heat ideal for seasoning dishes and sauces.
like all hot peppers, dried Mechico is rich in capsaicin, the compound responsible for its heat and with rubefacient properties stimulating circulation, as well as particularly high amounts of vitamin C.
