The dried Elicendio pepper is a variety that arose spontaneously a few years ago, likely from a natural cross between plants grown in the same garden. The fruits are medium-small, with a distinctive slightly curved horn shape, ripening to a bright red.
plant belongs to the species Capsicum annuum and has a medium-sized bushy habit, in line with typical Italian garden pepper varieties. It produces abundantly throughout the summer season.
sowing should be done between February and March, in a seedbed at about 22-26°C, transplanting after the last frosts. Fruits reach full ripeness in about 90-100 days from transplanting.
growing favors full sun exposure and fertile, well-drained soil. Like many spontaneous cross varieties, it often proves particularly hardy and adaptable to different soil types.
being a recent spontaneous selection, Elicendio still retains some genetic variability from plant to plant: it is normal to see slight differences in shape or heat level between specimens grown from the same seed batch.
generally resistant, it can occasionally be affected by aphids and red spider mites, especially under protected cultivation. Good air circulation between plants helps prevent the main fungal issues.
Elicendio reaches a medium-high heat level, estimated around 30,000 SHU on the Scoville scale. It works well both fresh and dried, ground or in flakes, to flavor sauces, preserves and traditional Italian spicy dishes.
like all hot peppers, dried Elicendio is rich in capsaicin, the compound responsible for its heat and with rubefacient properties stimulating circulation, as well as good amounts of vitamin C.
