The dried Explosive Ember pepper is an ornamental variety with extraordinarily multicolored fruits: the same plant simultaneously carries red, purple and yellow peppers, in a visual effect resembling tiny glowing embers, hence the name "Explosive Ember".
plant belongs to the species Capsicum annuum and has a compact, highly productive habit, with dozens of small upright fruits sprouting along every branch, making it one of the most spectacular ornamental varieties to grow.
sowing should be done between February and March, in a seedbed at about 22-26°C, transplanting after the last frosts. Fruits reach full ripeness in about 80-90 days from transplanting, gradually showing all their color shades.
growing favors full sun exposure and fertile, well-drained soil. Thanks to its compact habit it is perfect for pots and balconies too, where the color contrast of the fruits stands out at its best.
precisely because of its striking decorative look, Explosive Ember is highly valued as an outdoor ornamental plant as well as a source of hot pepper for the kitchen: fruits stay on the plant for a long time, extending the showy effect for weeks.
generally resistant, it can occasionally be affected by aphids and red spider mites, especially under protected cultivation. Good air circulation between plants helps prevent the main fungal issues.
Explosive Ember reaches a medium-high heat level, estimated around 30,000 SHU on the Scoville scale. Excellent both fresh and dried, ground or in flakes, to flavor sauces, preserves and spicy dishes.
like all hot peppers, dried Explosive Ember is rich in capsaicin, the compound responsible for its heat and with rubefacient properties stimulating circulation, as well as good amounts of vitamin C.
