Yuki F1 Chinese cabbage is a versatile hybrid with a medium-late cycle (around 65 days from transplanting), suited to both summer and autumn growing.
Its botanical name is Brassica rapa subsp. pekinensis, belonging to the Cruciferae family (Brassicaceae). The head can weigh 1 to 2 kg depending on plant spacing, with dark green outer leaves and a white or pale yellow interior.
Sowing is done either in late spring for a summer cycle or in summer for an autumn cycle, in well-worked, cool soil.
Yuki cabbage needs regular watering and fertile soil to develop a well-formed, compact head, and boasts excellent storage ability after harvest.
Space plants adequately to encourage well-developed heads and prevent waterlogging that could compromise product quality.
Like other Brassicaceae, it can be affected by cabbage white caterpillars, flea beetles and aphids; good crop rotation helps prevent phytosanitary issues.
Chinese cabbage is rich in water, vitamins and minerals, with a delicate flavour; it works well both raw in salads and quickly cooked in a pan or wok.
