Santée cabbage has a distinctive taste, a sublime mix between broccoli and asparagus, with numerous purple florets and sturdy green stems.
Its botanical name is Brassica oleracea var. italica, belonging to the Cruciferae family (Brassicaceae). The stem is thick and sturdy, very dark green, while the florets show a characteristic purple colouring.
Sowing should be done in well-worked, fertile soil during mild-temperature periods, to encourage even germination.
A highly productive plant, Santée produces numerous shoots rich in minerals and vitamins, with successive harvests over time.
Keep watering regular and harvest the shoots while still young to bring out their distinctive broccoli-asparagus flavour.
Like other Brassicaceae, it can be affected by cabbage white caterpillars, aphids and flea beetles, especially during the early growth stages of the seedlings.
Rich in vitamins and minerals, Santée cabbage is especially valued for its unique taste, ideal for both quick cooking and more elaborate dishes.
