Redbor red curly kale has strongly curled leaves with an intense reddish-purple colour and a sweet, pleasant flavour.
Its botanical name is Brassica oleracea var. sabellica, belonging to the Cruciferae family (Brassicaceae). The leaves are deeply frilled and curled, bright reddish-purple, with an ornamental appeal as well as culinary use.
Sowing is best done in late summer for an autumn-winter harvest, when cold weather intensifies the colour of the leaves.
A hardy, cold-resistant plant, Redbor kale tends to intensify its reddish-purple colouring precisely as temperatures drop.
Ensure a sunny position and fertile soil to support the development of the curly leaves, harvesting them progressively from the bottom up.
Like other Brassicaceae, it can be affected by cabbage white caterpillars and aphids, although the texture of the curly leaves makes it less appealing to some pests.
Rich in anthocyanins and antioxidants, this ornamental-edible kale is valued both in the kitchen, for salads and side dishes, and as a decorative element in the garden.
