A coloured variant of oak leaf lettuce, red oak leaf is highly productive and boasts a distinctive deep red colour, with lobed leaves that regrow quickly after harvesting.
It belongs to the species Lactuca sativa, family Asteraceae. The head is voluminous and compact, with deeply lobed leaves in intense red-bronze, tending towards reddish-brown.
Sow from March to November in a seedbed or directly in the field, transplanting seedlings once they reach 4-5 cm tall.
It prefers sunny to partly sunny spots, in loose soil rich in organic matter; it tolerates both heat and cooler temperatures well.
Thanks to its quick regrowth after cutting, it allows staggered harvests by taking only the outer leaves; full harvest occurs about 30-40 days after sowing.
The jagged leaves and reddish colouring naturally tend to keep some pests and slugs away; aphids may still appear under favourable conditions.
The head, surrounded by round green leaves with a deep red centre, offers a striking colour contrast ideal for decorative salads; it has a sweet, tender flavour.
Alongside the vitamins A and C typical of the green variety, the red colouring adds an extra content of antioxidant anthocyanins.
Per 100 grams, red oak leaf lettuce provides about 16 kcal, 1.3 g protein, 2.3 g carbohydrates, 0.2 g fat and 1.6 g fibre. Good source of vitamin A and antioxidants.
