One of the most loved and eye-catching varieties, Lollo Rossa stands out for its open head with frilly-edged leaves, in an intense reddish-purple colour that makes it a star of any salad.
It belongs to the species Lactuca sativa var. crispa, family Asteraceae. It forms an open head with tightly curled leaves, intensely reddish-purple across the whole leaf blade.
Sow from February to April under protection and from May directly outdoors, lightly covering the seeds with soil and keeping a spacing of 25x30 cm between plants.
It prefers loose, well-drained soil rich in humus and lime, in a sunny spot with medium exposure and constant watering to prevent the soil from drying out too much.
Correct watering is essential: the soil should stay constantly moist but not waterlogged, to avoid root rot; it is grown from spring to autumn.
It can be affected by downy mildew and grey mould in overly humid conditions; aphids and slugs are the most common pests to monitor.
Besides salads, it also works well in risotto and savoury pies; its intense red colour sets it apart from Lollo Bionda, which is dark green, both belonging to the crispa type.
Rich in vitamins A, B9, C and K, minerals such as potassium, calcium, magnesium and phosphorus, and trace elements like iron, zinc and manganese; its red colouring adds antioxidant anthocyanins.
Per 100 grams, Lollo Rossa lettuce provides about 16 kcal, 1.3 g protein, 2.3 g carbohydrates, 0.2 g fat and 1.5 g fibre. Good source of vitamin A, C and potassium.
